Allergic Reactions: There is a possibility of severe allergic reactions to Unasyn, which can be life-threatening, such as facial swelling and anaphylaxis. Patients with known allergies to antibiotics, particularly penicillin or cephalosporins, should exercise caution. Immediate medical attention is necessary if symptoms like hives, skin rash, redness, lip or tongue swelling, or breathing difficulties occur after taking this medication.
Severe Skin Reactions: Although uncommon, Unasyn may cause severe skin reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) syndrome. Those with a mononucleosis infection are at higher risk for skin rashes and should avoid using this medication if they have the infection. Seek medical help promptly if you experience skin changes such as rash, blisters, redness, or peeling.
Liver Issues: Unasyn use is infrequently associated with liver problems, which could potentially become serious and life-threatening. While liver damage is often reversible, individuals with a history of liver issues should be cautious.
Clostridioides Difficile Infection: The use of Unasyn may increase the risk of Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) infection, causing severe diarrhea. Antibiotics can alter the balance of normal bacteria in the digestive tract, leading to an overgrowth of C. diff.
Conditions that contraindicate the use of this medication include:
- A serious allergy to beta-lactam antibiotics such as penicillins and cephalosporins.
- A history of liver problems related to the use of Unasyn.
