Warnings

Antidepressants are prescribed to address various conditions, such as depression and other mental health disorders. These medications can be crucial in preventing suicidal thoughts or attempts and offer numerous benefits. Nonetheless, a minority of users, particularly those under the age of 25, may encounter an increase in depressive symptoms, changes in mental health, or suicidal thoughts or attempts. It is essential to engage in a thorough discussion with a healthcare provider about the potential risks and benefits of antidepressant use, especially for individuals under 25, even if the prescription is not directly related to a mental health disorder.

Consider the following precautions:

  • Promptly inform your doctor if you observe any worsening of depression or other psychiatric conditions, any unusual behavioral changes (including the onset or increase of suicidal thoughts or attempts), or any mental health changes (such as new or worsening anxiety, panic attacks, sleep disturbances, irritability, hostility, impulsive behavior, severe restlessness, or unusually rapid speech).
  • Pay close attention to these symptoms, particularly when beginning a new antidepressant or adjusting the dosage.

Effexor Xr Side Effects

You might experience some mild side effects such as nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, loss of appetite, blurred vision, nervousness, trouble sleeping, unusual sweating, or yawning. These are usually not serious and tend to improve as your body adjusts to the medication. However, if they persist or worsen, it’s important to inform your healthcare provider.

This medication can also cause an increase in blood pressure, so regularly monitoring your levels is crucial. Notify your healthcare provider if you notice elevated readings. There are also some more serious side effects to be aware of, including easy bleeding/bruising, decreased sexual interest, changes in sexual function, muscle cramps or weakness, and shaking (tremors). Promptly report these to your healthcare provider.

In rare instances, this medication can cause very serious side effects such as persistent cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, severe headaches, black stools, vomit resembling coffee grounds, eye pain or swelling, widened pupils, vision changes, and seizures. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these.

There is also a risk of developing serotonin syndrome, a serious condition characterized by symptoms like a fast heartbeat, hallucinations, loss of coordination, severe dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, twitching muscles, high fever, and unusual agitation. This risk increases if you are taking other drugs that affect serotonin levels.

While a very serious allergic reaction is rare, it’s essential to seek immediate medical help if you notice symptoms such as a rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. Always keep your healthcare provider informed of any unexpected effects you experience.

Interactions

Some medications can interact with this drug, potentially causing harmful effects. These include other medications that increase the risk of bleeding or bruising, such as antiplatelet drugs like Clopidogrel, NSAIDs like Ibuprofen and Naproxen, and blood thinners like Dabigatran and Warfarin. Aspirin may also heighten bleeding risks when combined with this drug. However, if you are prescribed low-dose aspirin (81-162 mg daily) for heart attack or stroke prevention, continue to follow your doctor’s advice unless instructed otherwise. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for further guidance.

Avoid using MAO inhibitors (such as isocarboxazid, Linezolid, Metaxalone, methylene blue, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, Rasagiline, safinamide, Selegiline, Tranylcypromine) while on this medication due to the risk of a severe, possibly life-threatening interaction. Most MAO inhibitors should not be taken for two weeks before and at least seven days after stopping this drug. Your doctor can provide specific instructions on when to start or stop these medications.

The risk of serotonin syndrome or toxicity increases if you take other drugs that elevate serotonin levels. This includes certain street drugs like MDMA, herbal supplements such as St. John's wort, some antidepressants like SSRIs (including Fluoxetine and paroxetine) and other SNRIs (such as Duloxetine and milnacipran), and Tryptophan. The risk is higher when starting or increasing the dose of these medications.

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any products that cause drowsiness, such as opioid pain or cough relievers (like codeine or hydrocodone), alcohol, marijuana, sleep or anxiety medications (such as Alprazolam, Lorazepam, Zolpidem), muscle relaxants (like Carisoprodol, Cyclobenzaprine), or antihistamines (such as Cetirizine, diphenhydramine). Check all your medications, including those for allergies or colds, as they might contain ingredients that cause drowsiness. Ask your pharmacist for advice on using these products safely.

Venlafaxine is very similar to desvenlafaxine, so do not take medications containing desvenlafaxine while using venlafaxine.

This medication might interfere with certain laboratory tests, such as urine tests for amphetamines, leading to incorrect results. Ensure lab personnel and all your healthcare providers know you are using this medication.
