Perphenazine Side Effects

You may experience some common side effects such as drowsiness, constipation, dry mouth, dizziness, lightheadedness, blurred vision, tiredness, or weight gain. These effects are usually mild but should be reported to your healthcare provider if they persist or worsen. To reduce the risk of falls, rise slowly from sitting or lying positions.

Some side effects may require immediate attention, including muscle spasms, tremors, restlessness, a mask-like facial expression, drooling, trouble swallowing, or a shuffling walk. If these occur, consult your healthcare provider, who may adjust your medication.

In rare cases, this medication can cause tardive dyskinesia, characterized by involuntary movements like lip smacking or tongue thrusting. Report these symptoms promptly. An increase in prolactin levels can also occur, leading to symptoms such as unwanted breast milk, menstrual changes, or sexual side effects in men. If you notice these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Serious side effects include persistent nausea, difficulty urinating, unusual bruising, slow heartbeat, signs of infection, severe muscle cramps, seizures, abdominal pain, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Seek medical help if you experience any of these.

Moreover, a condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) could occur, marked by fever, muscle pain, severe tiredness, confusion, sweating, irregular heartbeat, dark urine, or kidney problems. This is a medical emergency. Allergic reactions are rare but require immediate attention if symptoms such as rash, swelling, or breathing difficulties occur. Always inform your healthcare provider of any side effects you experience.

Interactions

If you're using any products that induce drowsiness, it's important to inform your doctor or pharmacist. This includes opioid pain or cough medications like codeine or hydrocodone, alcohol, marijuana, sleep or anxiety medications such as Alprazolam, Lorazepam, or Zolpidem, muscle relaxants like Carisoprodol or Cyclobenzaprine, and antihistamines such as Cetirizine or diphenhydramine. Always review the labels of your medications, including those for allergies or cold-and-cough, as they may have ingredients that can cause drowsiness. Consult your pharmacist to ensure you are using these products safely.
Perphenazine FAQs
Why is perphenazine not used?

Perphenazine is not commonly used today primarily due to the availability of newer antipsychotic medications that tend to have a more favorable side effect profile. Newer atypical antipsychotics often have fewer extrapyramidal side effects, such as tremors and rigidity, which are more commonly associated with older typical antipsychotics like perphenazine. However, perphenazine may still be used in certain cases where it is deemed appropriate by a healthcare provider.

Certain antipsychotics also have mood-stabilizing properties and are used in the treatment of bipolar disorder. These include:- Quetiapine- Olanzapine- Aripiprazole- Risperidone- Lurasidone- AsenapineThese medications can help manage mood swings and stabilize mood in individuals with bipolar disorder.

Perphenazine is not an atypical antipsychotic; it is classified as a typical antipsychotic.

Examples of atypical antipsychotics include aripiprazole, olanzapine, quetiapine, risperidone, clozapine, ziprasidone, and lurasidone. These medications are commonly used to treat psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Perphenazine is not classified as a mood stabilizer. It is an antipsychotic medication primarily used to treat symptoms of schizophrenia and to control severe nausea and vomiting. Mood stabilizers are typically used to treat mood disorders such as bipolar disorder, and perphenazine is not commonly used for this purpose.
