Warnings

Antidepressant medications are commonly prescribed to address depression and various other mental health disorders. These drugs can significantly reduce the risk of suicidal thoughts and attempts, along with offering additional therapeutic benefits. However, research indicates that a minority of individuals, particularly those under 25, may experience intensified depression, other mood disturbances, or suicidal thoughts when using antidepressants for any condition. It is crucial to discuss the potential risks and benefits of these medications with a healthcare provider, especially for individuals younger than 25, regardless of whether the treatment is aimed at a mental health condition.

  • Immediately inform a doctor if there are signs of worsening depression, emerging or escalating psychiatric symptoms, unusual changes in behavior, or any mental health changes such as new or worsening anxiety, panic attacks, sleep difficulties, irritability, feelings of hostility or anger, impulsiveness, severe restlessness, or excessively rapid speech.
  • It is particularly important to monitor these symptoms closely when initiating a new antidepressant or altering the dosage.

Mirtazapine Side Effects

You might experience dizziness, drowsiness, lightheadedness, increased appetite, weight gain, dry mouth, or constipation with this medication. If these effects persist or worsen, inform your healthcare provider promptly. To ease dry mouth, consider sugarless candy, gum, ice chips, drinking water, or using a saliva substitute. To minimize dizziness or lightheadedness, rise slowly from sitting or lying positions.

While many people using this medication do not experience severe side effects, it is important to be aware of them. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience swelling of the hands or feet, shaking, or confusion. Seek urgent medical attention for serious symptoms such as a fast or irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, fainting, eye pain, redness or swelling, widened pupils, or vision changes like seeing rainbows around lights or blurred vision.

This medication may increase serotonin levels and, in rare cases, lead to serotonin syndrome, a serious condition. The risk is higher if combined with other serotonin-boosting drugs. Watch for symptoms including a rapid heartbeat, hallucinations, loss of coordination, severe dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle twitching, unexplained fever, or unusual agitation, and seek immediate medical help if they occur.

Allergic reactions to this medication are rare but can be serious. Get immediate medical help if you notice symptoms such as fever, swollen lymph nodes, rash, itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing. This list does not cover all possible side effects. If you notice other unusual effects, consult your healthcare provider.

Interactions

Avoid using MAO inhibitors while on this medication, as it could lead to a dangerous or even fatal interaction. MAO inhibitors include drugs like isocarboxazid, linezolid, metaxalone, methylene blue, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, rasagiline, safinamide, selegiline, and tranylcypromine. It is generally recommended to avoid these inhibitors for two weeks before and after your treatment. Consult your doctor to know when it's safe to start or stop using this medication.

Additionally, the risk of serotonin syndrome or toxicity can increase if you take other drugs that boost serotonin levels. This includes recreational drugs like MDMA (also known as "ecstasy"), herbal supplements like St. John's wort, and certain antidepressants such as SSRIs (e.g., fluoxetine, paroxetine) and SNRIs (e.g., duloxetine, venlafaxine), as well as tryptophan. The danger may be greater when you begin or raise the dose of these drugs.

Inform your healthcare provider if you are using other substances that might cause drowsiness. This includes alcohol, cannabis (marijuana), antihistamines (e.g., cetirizine, diphenhydramine), medications for sleep or anxiety (e.g., alprazolam, diazepam, zolpidem), muscle relaxants (e.g., carisoprodol, cyclobenzaprine), and opioid pain relievers (e.g., codeine, hydrocodone).

Always check the labels of your medications, especially for allergy or cold products, as they might contain ingredients that can cause drowsiness. Consult your pharmacist to ensure safe use of these products.
