This medication is used to relieve the discomfort, pain, frequent urge to urinate, and cramps/spasms of the urinary tract caused by an infection or a medical procedure. Methenamine is an antibacterial drug. Methylene blue is an antiseptic and is related to a group of drugs called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO inhibitors). Both methenamine and methylene blue help to prevent the growth of bacteria in the urine. Salicylate, which is related to aspirin, is a pain reliever. This product also contains an ingredient (such as sodium phosphate, benzoic acid) to make the urine more acidic, which helps methenamine work better. Hyoscyamine is an antispasmodic drug that relaxes the muscles of the urinary tract to relieve cramps/spasms. This product should not be used to treat a urinary tract infection. If you have a bacterial infection, an antibiotic is usually prescribed to treat it. Consult your doctor for more details. This medication is not recommended for children younger than 6 years because they are more sensitive to the side effects.

Uribel Side Effects

You may experience mild side effects such as nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision, or constipation. These effects are generally manageable and temporary. To alleviate a dry mouth, try sucking on sugarless candy or ice chips, chewing sugarless gum, drinking water, or using a saliva substitute. Additionally, this medication may cause urine and sometimes stools to appear blue-green, which is harmless and resolves after stopping the medication.

However, be alert for more serious side effects. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you notice symptoms like hot, dry, or flushed skin, decreased sweating, eye pain, or difficulty urinating, as these may indicate more significant issues. There are also very serious side effects requiring urgent medical attention, including easy bruising or bleeding, black or tarry stools, severe abdominal pain, and vomiting that resembles coffee grounds. These could be signs of liver problems or other serious conditions.

In rare cases, this medication may trigger a hypertensive crisis, characterized by an extremely high blood pressure that could be life-threatening. Seek immediate medical help if you experience a severe headache, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, or severe nausea, as well as any changes in vision or sensitivity to light. Although an allergic reaction to this drug is rare, symptoms like a rash, swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing require prompt medical attention.

Always remain vigilant for any other unexpected effects and consult your healthcare provider for advice.

Interactions

This medication can interact with several other products and medications. These include apraclonidine, atomoxetine, bupropion, carbamazepine, dichlorphenamide, methotrexate, mifepristone, potassium capsules/tablets, pramlintide, tetrabenazine, certain Parkinson's medications (like entacapone, levodopa, tolcapone), specific blood pressure medications (such as guanethidine, methyldopa), sulfonamide drugs (including sulfa antibiotics like sulfamethoxazole), and sympathomimetics (such as amphetamine, ephedrine). It can also interact with products that reduce urine acidity, such as antacids, sodium bicarbonate, potassium/sodium citrate, and acetazolamide.

This medication may increase bleeding risk if taken with other drugs that also cause bleeding, like anti-platelet medications such as clopidogrel and blood thinners like dabigatran, enoxaparin, or warfarin.

Combining this medication with other MAO inhibitors can lead to a severe and possibly fatal interaction. Avoid using other MAO inhibitors (such as isocarboxazid, linezolid, metaxalone, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, rasagiline, safinamide, selegiline, tranylcypromine) during treatment and for two weeks before and after using this medication. Consult your doctor about when to start or stop this medication.

Before using this product, inform your doctor about any other drugs you take that could significantly raise blood pressure (hypertensive crisis) when combined with this medication. This includes herbal products like ephedra (ma huang), nasal decongestants (such as phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine), stimulants (like amphetamines, ephedrine, epinephrine), and diet aids. Avoid using these with this medication and consult your doctor or pharmacist for further guidance.

If you're taking azole antifungals (such as itraconazole, ketoconazole), ensure there is a gap of at least two hours between taking these and this medication.

Carefully review labels on all prescription and non-prescription medicines because many contain pain relievers or fever reducers (e.g., aspirin, NSAIDs like ibuprofen, ketorolac, or naproxen), which are similar to salicylate and may increase side effects. If your doctor has prescribed low-dose aspirin for heart attack or stroke prevention (typically 81-162 milligrams daily), continue unless advised otherwise. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are using other products that cause drowsiness, including alcohol, marijuana (cannabis), antihistamines (such as cetirizine, diphenhydramine), sleep or anxiety medications (like alprazolam, diazepam, zolpidem), muscle relaxants, and opioid painkillers (such as codeine).

Examine all your medication labels (including allergy or cough-and-cold products) as they may contain ingredients inducing drowsiness. Discuss with your pharmacist how to use these products safely.

This medication may affect certain laboratory tests, possibly leading to false results. Ensure all your doctors and lab personnel know you are using this medication.

Uribel FAQs
What is Uribel used for?

Uribel is used to relieve discomfort associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs) and other urinary conditions. It helps alleviate symptoms such as pain, burning, and the frequent urge to urinate.

Phenazopyridine is the generic equivalent to Pyridium. It is used to relieve urinary tract pain, burning, irritation, and discomfort. Other brand names for phenazopyridine include Azo-Standard and Uristat. It is important to consult a healthcare provider before using any medication.

Uribel is a prescription medication and is not available over the counter. A healthcare provider must prescribe it.

Uribel and Pyridium are not the same, although they are both used to manage urinary symptoms. Uribel is a combination medication that contains several active ingredients, including methenamine, sodium phosphate, phenyl salicylate, methylene blue, and hyoscyamine. It is used to relieve discomfort in the urinary tract. Pyridium, on the other hand, contains phenazopyridine as its active ingredient and is specifically used to relieve pain, burning, and discomfort in the urinary tract. While they may be used for similar symptoms, they are different medications with different compositions.

The cost of Uribel without insurance can vary depending on the pharmacy and location. On average, the price for a supply of 60 capsules can range from approximately $70 to $100. It is advisable to check with local pharmacies for the most accurate pricing. Additionally, discount programs or coupons may be available to help reduce the cost.
