Drug Details

Capecitabine, known by its brand name Xeloda, is an oral chemotherapy medication used to treat various types of cancer, including breast, colorectal, pancreatic, gastric, and esophageal cancers. This medication is particularly useful after surgical removal of tumors and in advanced or metastatic stages of these cancers. Capecitabine works by transforming inside the body into fluorouracil, its active form. Fluorouracil inhibits the production of genetic material necessary for cancer cells to grow and multiply. Since cancer cells grow faster than normal cells, they are more affected by this process, which helps in slowing or stopping their spread. For optimal effectiveness, Capecitabine is generally taken twice daily, within 30 minutes after a meal. Common side effects may include hand-and-foot syndrome, which is a skin reaction, and severe diarrhea.
