Capecitabine Warnings
Capecitabine (Xeloda) is a medication with several critical safety considerations. It is important to be aware of its potential risks, necessary precautions, and specific instructions for certain populations. If you have any concerns, please consult your healthcare provider.
Increased Bleeding Risk: When taken with blood thinners like warfarin, capecitabine can significantly increase the risk of serious, possibly life-threatening bleeding. This risk may be heightened in individuals aged 60 years or older. If you are using warfarin, inform your healthcare provider and ensure regular blood tests to monitor your blood thinner levels closely.
Severe Diarrhea: Capecitabine can cause diarrhea, which may be severe and lead to dehydration. Monitor your bowel movements, and contact your healthcare team immediately if you experience a significant increase in stools or notice blood in your stools accompanied by severe pain or fever.
Heart Problems: There is a risk of heart issues, including heart attacks and abnormal heart rhythms, particularly if you have a history of heart disease. Share your medical history with your oncologist for appropriate monitoring.
Dehydration and Kidney Issues: This medication can lead to dehydration, potentially causing severe kidney failure. Ensure adequate fluid intake and report any side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite to your care team.
Serious Skin Reactions: Capecitabine may cause hand-and-foot syndrome, characterized by tingling, numbness, or swelling in the hands and feet. If symptoms become painful or interfere with daily activities, inform your healthcare provider for possible dose adjustment.
Low Blood Cell Counts: Be aware of the risk of low blood cell counts, especially when taking capecitabine with other chemotherapy drugs.
Potential Harm to Unborn Babies: The medication may harm an unborn baby. Females capable of becoming pregnant should use effective birth control during treatment and for six months after the last dose. Males should use birth control such as condoms for three months after the last dose.
Genetic Condition and Toxicity: People with a rare genetic condition called dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) deficiency may experience severe toxicity. Testing for this condition may be necessary before starting treatment.
Hypersensitivity: Do not use capecitabine if you have a known hypersensitivity to fluorouracil.
In case of overdose or severe reactions, seek emergency medical assistance immediately. Always keep open communication with your healthcare provider about your treatment and any side effects you may experience.
