Fluvastatin Warnings
This document outlines essential safety information and warnings associated with the use of fluvastatin. It is crucial to understand these potential risks and precautions. If you have any concerns, please consult your healthcare provider.
Muscle Pain and Damage: Fluvastatin can lead to muscle pain and weakness. In rare instances, it may cause rhabdomyolysis, a severe condition that can result in kidney damage. The risk increases if you are 65 years or older, have uncontrolled hypothyroidism, kidney issues, are on a higher dose of fluvastatin, or are taking other medications that could affect muscles.
Liver Concerns: Fluvastatin may elevate liver enzyme levels, indicating potential liver damage. Although often temporary and asymptomatic, serious liver complications, including failure, have occurred. Those with a history of liver issues or who consume large quantities of alcohol are at a higher risk.
Blood Sugar Levels: There is evidence that statins like fluvastatin might increase blood sugar levels, potentially affecting hemoglobin A1C levels. Despite this, the benefits of using statins generally outweigh the risk of elevated blood sugar.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Risks: Fluvastatin is not recommended during pregnancy unless its benefits significantly surpass the risks, as statins can harm an unborn child. If you become pregnant or plan to, discuss safer alternatives with your healthcare provider.
Contraindications: This medication should not be used if you have the following conditions, as it can pose serious health risks:
- Existing liver issues, including liver failure or severe cirrhosis.
- Persistently elevated liver enzyme levels with no known cause.
In case of an overdose or severe side effects, seek immediate medical attention. Always inform your healthcare provider about any other medications you are taking to avoid harmful interactions.
