Darunavir, marketed as Prezista, is a medication prescribed to treat HIV infections in individuals aged 3 years and older. It is part of a broader antiretroviral therapy (ARV) regimen and works by inhibiting a protein called protease, which the HIV virus requires to replicate and spread. By blocking this protein, darunavir reduces the amount of the virus in the body, allowing the immune system to function more effectively and lowering the risk of complications such as infections or cancer, thereby improving the quality of life. To enhance its effectiveness, darunavir is administered alongside a "booster" like ritonavir or cobicistat, which increases its levels in the body. While darunavir is crucial in controlling HIV, it is not a cure. Patients should adhere strictly to their prescribed medication schedule and use protective measures like condoms to prevent the transmission of HIV. Sharing personal items that might be contaminated with blood or body fluids should be avoided.
