generic Symbicort, Breyna

This product is used to control and prevent symptoms (wheezing and shortness of breath) caused by asthma or ongoing lung disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-COPD, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema). It contains 2 medications: budesonide and formoterol. Budesonide belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids. It works by reducing the irritation and swelling of the airways. Formoterol belongs to the class of drugs known as long-acting beta agonists. It works by relaxing the muscles around the airways so that they open up and you can breathe more easily. Controlling symptoms of breathing problems can decrease time lost from work or school. When used alone, long-acting beta agonists (such as formoterol) may rarely increase the risk of serious (sometimes fatal) asthma-related breathing problems. However, combination inhaled corticosteroid and long-acting beta agonists, such as this product, do not increase the risk of serious asthma-related breathing problems. Before using this medication, it is important to learn how to use it properly. If an asthma attack occurs, use your quick-relief inhaler (such as albuterol, also called salbutamol in some countries) as prescribed. See also How to Use section.

Budesonide-formoterol FAQs
Is budesonide formoterol the same as Symbicort?

Yes, budesonide and formoterol are the active ingredients in Symbicort. Symbicort is a brand name for the combination of these two medications, which are used to manage asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Budesonide and formoterol are two different medications that are often used in combination to treat asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Budesonide is a corticosteroid that helps reduce inflammation in the airways, while formoterol is a long-acting beta-agonist (LABA) that helps relax and open the airways for easier breathing.Symbicort is a brand name medication that combines both budesonide and formoterol in a single inhaler. It is used to manage and control symptoms of asthma and COPD by providing both anti-inflammatory and bronchodilator effects.

A suitable substitute for Symbicort, which is a combination of budesonide and formoterol, would be another inhaler that combines a corticosteroid with a long-acting beta-agonist (LABA). Alternatives include Advair (fluticasone/salmeterol), Dulera (mometasone/formoterol), and Breo Ellipta (fluticasone/vilanterol). It is important for the patient to consult with their healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate alternative based on their specific medical needs and condition.

Eligibility for the $35 Symbicort offer typically depends on several factors, including insurance coverage and income level. Generally, this offer is available to patients who have commercial insurance that covers prescription medications. It is not available to those with government insurance programs such as Medicare or Medicaid. Additionally, there may be specific terms and conditions that apply, so it is advisable for patients to check with their healthcare provider or the program's official website for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

Spiriva and Symbicort are often prescribed together for individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma to manage symptoms more effectively. Spiriva is a long-acting anticholinergic that helps to relax and open the airways, while Symbicort is a combination of a long-acting beta-agonist and an inhaled corticosteroid, which helps to reduce inflammation and further relax the airways. Using both medications can provide a more comprehensive approach to controlling symptoms and improving lung function. However, the specific treatment plan should always be determined by a healthcare provider based on the individual's condition and needs.
